In the Athabascan language, the word “Ahtna” means people of the Copper River.
Ahtna, Inc. was formed as a for profit company in 1972 after the passage of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANSCA) in 1971. Under the Indian Self-Determination Act of 1974, P.L. 93.638, Ahtna, Inc. was designated a minority-owned enterprise. Ahtna, Inc. is one of the thirteen native corporations in Alaska formed under ANSCA and has approximately 1,249 shareholders. The majority of shareholders are Athabascan Indians who settled in the Copper River Basin region over 7,000 years ago. 1,528,000 acres of land were conveyed to Ahtna, inc. as of December 1998 from an entitlement of 1,770,000 acres under ANCSA. Ahtna, Inc. represents eight villages in south central Alaska: Cantwell, Chitina, Chistochina, Copper Center, Gakona, Gulkana, Mentasta, and Tazlina. Ahtna land is abundant with natural resources: copper, gold, silver, lead, molybdenum, and platinum.
